The Joe Murphy Column
Received a short note from Lou McGee on the Barcelona Challenge loft, she wrote, ‘Just thought I would write a brief one to keep you up to date with what is going on in the garden, we are pleased to say that the shoot season is drawing to a close with the shoot just happening at the weekends so since Tuesday we have been having the birds out again for exercise. John goes up the loft at 08.30 and cleans and refills the drinkers then by the time he has done this it is light enough to start letting the birds out at 9 am 35 yearling cocks go out till 10 then from 10 till 11 the next lot of 35 yearling cocks go out then from 11 till 12 a section of yearling hens go out then from 12 till 1 another section of yearling hens go out then from 1 till 2 the last section of yearling hens go out then from 2 till 3 the first section of 2 year olds go out who are paired up now ready for next young bird auction John paired these up on Tuesday. Then from 3 till 4 the other section of paired 2 year olds, then from 4 till 5 our race team go out who are also paired as we will be underlaying the eggs from the Barcelona birds under these as we do not want them to rear yet. Whilst these birds are out John then goes through section by section cleaning the aviaries ready for the next day, so as you can see now that the season is upon us again we don’t see much of him ,unless he pops down for a coffee, but he would not have it any other way, he really is in my mind the ultimate pigeon fancier wanting everything and doing everything to perfection, nothing stops his routine even now whilst he has a bad back he wont sit down he is up the garden doing this routine looking at the time so the birds are out the same time and in at the same time every day. As soon as I get our race programme I will forward it on to you all, exciting times are a coming!! Speak to you soon as always take care, Lou McGee’
This is what appeals to me first and foremost as a pigeon fancier; that John McGee is dedicated to the pigeons and anyone who is prepared to put in this amount of work into the pigeons deserves to win. All one can ask is when you send birds to these one loft races is that the loft manager is in the same frame of mind as yourself, and John McGee is the same as me; he wants is to compete against the best and to do so he has to work at it, it is the same with flying in your own club or the national. You will never win if you do not work at your pigeons or anything for that matter. Believe me there is nothing I would love more than for John to time in one of my birds FIRST (to the loft) from the Barcelona race. It will not happen this year as my candidates are only yearlings but I do believe if they survive John’s management then they will give a good account of themselves in 2010. I’m quite excited at the prospect of the 2009 Barcelona race when John will be competing for the first time, he has a great team of pigeon who have been well looked after and are schooled ready for the big one. To all the fanciers who have birds in this years race I honestly wish you well and wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone from Britain won the Barcelona International flying to John McGee’s loft in France; this would be the ultimate ‘Icing on the Cake’ I have just received this startling news from Lou who wrote ‘I start this article with a very heavy heart as on Saturday 7th February we had a phone call from our partner John Tyerman, he has not been feeling too clever in past months and he visited the doctors for some tests. The results are John has been diagnosed with cancer, from what we gather it is quite a rare form, he currently is waiting for further tests to get a clearer picture of what is going on, so to John and Linda and all the family we are thinking of you and really hope you can beat this, I know that you'll fight it all the way’. What can I say other than you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time John and Linda.
Bereavement Sale
A request from George Briggs to remember fanciers that the entire clearance sale of the late Eddie Wighton from Dundee will take place this Sunday 22nd February in Dundee Clubroom's Smith Street Dundee at 2.pm. There are approx 30 old birds on offer with the usual baskets and clocks also up for sale. There is not much information on the birds however George hopes to have more details on the pens. Eddie was 45th open Ypres with the SNFC in 2008; anyone looking for a spare pair to fill a nest box then this could be the sale to attend.
Young Bird Exchange
I have received quite a few entries for this year Sporting Challenge young bird exchange with the response in the first week very encouraging; as it is new fanciers who have taken up the challenge. Many of last years participants have also joined and I would think from the response I have received so far we will have more than the 28 fanciers who joined in 2008. If you are interested in swapping a youngster with some of the top fanciers in Scotland then this is your change; you never know you may even be drawn against a past SNFC winner. Last year some fanciers swapped a pair of youngsters in the event that if one was lost they had the other to compete for the trophy on offer. I have no problem with this so long as I receive the nominated ring number by the last old bird race of the season which is Falaise. The earlier the draw is made then the better each fancier has of swapping birds which will be well established and settled into their new surroundings. I would think a final date of 1st April should be suitable to most fanciers and I will make the draw on this date and then contact everyone who has participated within the following week to tell them who they are drawn against. One thing for certain is that if you are not in the young bird exchange then you have no chance of winning one of the beautiful trophies for the Breeder or the Racer. There is also a trophy for you to keep as a memento of winning this young bird exchange competition.
Promoting the Sport
Received this email from Marlene McKay wife of Ian who is the president of the Aberdeen federation; Marlene wrote ‘Ian is still on his way home from the SNFC meeting (now at 00.20am Friday) and I thought you might like to know that Ian was promoting the sport today. It is 200 years since Charles Darwin was born and there was an event at the Zoology building to celebrate the occasion; as we know Charles bred pigeons while working on his theory of evolution’. Ian was asked to give a talk on the sport of racing pigeons to 3 schools (individually) The children were amazed at the beauty of the birds and how soft they felt they were all interested including the teachers. Photographs were taken and will appear in the local Press and Journal this Friday. Hopefully it will go some way to help promote the sport to the general public yours Marlene’. My thanks to Marlene and I would just like to add a comment; Ian and Willie Davidson have travelled down to Edinburgh area today for this meeting. It has snowed on the east side of Scotland today with about 6 inches of snow falling throughout the day. Many people at my work could not come into work today because of the snow as it was too dangerous to drive in it. Yet here we have 2 fanciers travelled all the way from Aberdeen to Edinburgh to attend a committee meeting, that is dedication. Let’s be honest how many of you reading this article would have done it, not many!! The pigeon sport should be proud of people like this who take on these jobs and try their best to help their fellow fanciers. So the next time something goes wrong at a race marking or clock station just remember today when you where in your bed fast asleep these men were on their way home from a meeting to make sure YOU ENJOY your pigeon sport.
Touching Poem
Her hair was up in a pony tail, her favourite dress tied with a bow. Today was Daddy's Day at school, and she couldn't wait to go. But her mummy tried to tell her, that she probably should stay home. Why the kids might not understand, if she went to school alone. But she was not afraid; she knew just what to say. What to tell her classmates of why he wasn't there today. But still her mother worried, for her to face this day alone. And that was why once again, she tried to keep her daughter home. But the little girl went to school eager to tell them all. About a dad she never sees a dad who never calls.
There were daddies along the back wall, for everyone to meet. Children squirming impatiently, anxious in their seats One by one the teacher called a student from the class.
To introduce their daddy, as seconds slowly passed At last the teacher called her name,
every child turned to stare. Each of them was searching, a man who wasn't there.
'Where's her daddy at?' She heard a boy call out. 'She probably doesn't have one,'
another student dared to shout. And from somewhere near the back, she heard a daddy say, 'Looks like another deadbeat dad, too busy to waste his day.'
The words did not offend her, as she smiled up at her Mum and looked back at her teacher, who told her to go on. And with hands behind her back, slowly she began to speak. And out from the mouth of a child, came words incredibly unique.
'My Daddy couldn't be here, because he lives so far away. But I know he wishes he could be, since this is such a special day. And though you cannot meet him, I wanted you to know all about my daddy, and how much he loves me so. He loved to tell me stories
he taught me to ride my bike. He surprised me with pink roses, and taught me to fly a kite. We used to share fudge sundaes, and ice cream in a cone. And though you cannot see him I'm not standing here alone. 'Cause my daddy's always with me, even though we are apart I know because he told me, he'll forever be in my heart'
With that, her little hand reached up, and lay across her chest feeling her own heartbeat,
beneath her favourite dress. And from somewhere in the crowd of dads, her mother stood in tears. Proudly watching her daughter, who was wise beyond her years, for she stood up for the love of a man not in her life? Doing what was best for her, doing what was right.
And when she dropped her hand back down, staring straight into the crowd.
She finished with a voice so soft, but its message clear and loud. 'I love my daddy very much, he's my shining star. And if he could, he'd be here, but heaven's just too far.
You see he is a soldier and died just this past year when a roadside bomb hit his convoy
and taught brave men to fear. But sometimes when I close my eyes, it's like he never went away.' And then she closed her eyes, and saw him there that day. And to her mother’s amazement, she witnessed with surprise. A room full of daddies and children,
all starting to close their eyes. Who knows what they saw before them, who knows what they felt inside. Perhaps for merely a second, they saw him at her side. 'I know you're with me Daddy,' to the silence she called out. And what happened next made believers,
of those once filled with doubt. Not one in that room could explain it, for each of their eyes had been closed. But there on the desk beside her, was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose. And a child was blessed, if only for a moment, by the love of her shining star.
And given the gift of believing that heaven is never too far
This week’s Joke
Look Mum I'm Scottish...
A young English boy finds a kilt and wears it for a laugh. He goes to his mum and says "Look mum I'm Scottish". She freaks and slaps him across the head. "I can't believe you just said that, go and tell your gran what you just said"
The boy goes to his gran and says "Look gran I'm Scottish!" She freaks and slaps him across the head. "I can't believe you just said that, go tell your dad what you just said"
The boy goes to his dad and says "Look dad - I'm Scottish. His dad goes ballistic - takes off his belt and gives him a good thrashing. Then he says to him "I can't believe you just said that, now how do you feel"?
The boy says - "I've only been Scottish for 5 minutes and I hate you English so and so’s already".
